NT Solar is thrilled to announce the addition of Kaylyn Semones to the team as Portfolio Manager!

As Portfolio Manager, Kaylyn supports reporting, asset management, and compliance for renewable energy tax credit investments. She works closely with investors, sponsors, developers, and internal stakeholders to monitor portfolio performance and support reporting across the firm’s renewable energy investments.

Recently our marketing team sat down with Kaylyn to learn more about her background and interests. Check out her interview below!

Q: Can you talk a little bit about your educational and professional background?

A: I most recently worked as Finance Manager at ClearGen LLC, a CBRE portfolio company focused on sustainable infrastructure investing, where I led investment tax credit transfer transactions and underwrote acquisitions in distributed generation renewables. Before that, I worked in Bank of America’s Global Corporate & Investment Banking Credit division, supporting power, utilities, and renewable energy credit underwriting. I earned my bachelor’s degree in finance from Virginia Tech.

Q: What made you interested in the world of renewable energy?

A: Early in my career, I went through a placement process where I had the opportunity to rank and match into one of several industry groups. Two stood out to me: healthcare and power, utilities, and renewables. Both appealed to me because the work is both innovative and mission-driven.

I landed in the power, utilities, and renewables group, and as I gained more experience in the renewables space, I realized it was the right fit for me. I found a unique combination of complex, intellectually engaging work and the opportunity to help solve energy challenges while creating lasting value for communities.

Q: What are some of your professional strengths and interests?

A: My strengths are centered around bringing structure to complex work through a thoughtful, steady approach. My background includes credit analysis, underwriting, and managing tax credit transactions end-to-end, where sound judgment, clear communication, and reliability are key. What interests me most is collaborating across internal teams and with our external partners to help execute and manage successful projects and investments. I also enjoy finding ways to improve and build scalable processes that support growth.

Q: Who or what inspires you the most?

A: I’ve been fortunate to work with leaders throughout my career who have had a lasting impact on me. It wasn’t just their technical expertise, but the way they led people that inspired me most. The individuals who stand out to me are those who can navigate complex, high-stakes situations while remaining approachable, generous with their knowledge, and invested in the success of those around them. They’ve shown me that some of the best leaders are defined not only by what they accomplish, but by how they treat others. Those are qualities I admire and strive to emulate in my own career because they create trust, collaboration, and strong teams.

Q: What are you most excited about as you step into this role?

A: I’m excited to deepen my expertise in tax credits and tax equity while following projects throughout their entire lifecycle. I’m also looking forward to building strong relationships with our partners and expanding my perspective across the broader tax credit market, including historic and new markets tax credits. Above all, I’m eager to be part of a team that directs capital toward meaningful projects while delivering strong outcomes for investors.

We’re thrilled to have Kaylyn as part of the NT Solar team!

NT Solar is thrilled to announce the addition of Mortaza Afghan to the team as Transaction Manager.

In this role, Mortaza will be supporting the due diligence, structuring, and execution of renewable energy tax credit investments, working closely with investors, developers, and internal stakeholders.

Our marketing team recently sat down with Mortaza for a short interview to learn more about his background and interests.

Q: Can you talk a little bit about your educational and professional background?

A: I got my bachelor’s degree from Middlebury College in Vermont where I did a joint major in International Politics and Economics. After college, I went directly to grad school to do my master’s at The Fletcher School at Tufts University, focusing on Business for Social Impact & Political Economy, and that’s where I became interested in impact investing.

After I graduated, I worked in renewable energy finance as a tax equity investment professional. Most recently, I was a Senior Associate at a clean energy investment firm, working on a team that managed community-based solar transactions from underwriting through closing. My role included investor sourcing, coordinating due diligence, and supporting transaction execution across partnerships with high-net-worth individuals, banks, and institutional investors.

Q: What made you interested in the world of renewable energy?

A: When I was interviewing for roles after graduate school, I was looking at both impact investing firms that provide consulting services, and firms that focus more on the research side. Part of the reason I ended up going with my previous employer was the focus of the firm. They were focused on democratizing the benefits of solar and bringing solar to LMI communities. That was a direct connection between what I was looking for; a role where I could have an impact, but also be able to utilize my background in finance where I could learn more about how to structure investments that have both financial returns and also community benefit.

I think specifically with the renewable energy and solar projects that I have been a part of, I appreciate that you have a role in directing capital towards projects that help communities create green jobs, help with climate change and reducing carbon emissions, and ultimately, provide renewable energy access to communities that are usually left behind.

Q: What are some of your professional strengths and interests?

A: I would say some of my greatest strengths include transaction management, attention to detail, and the ability to coordinate across multiple stakeholders. I have helped manage transactions from early-stage diligence through closing, balancing financial analysis, third party diligence, legal coordination, and investor communication, often all at once. I’m also really comfortable working in fast-paced environments where ownership and execution are critical. I’m particularly interested in improving transaction efficiency and standardization in the tax equity and transferability markets, helping make the process more streamlined and scalable for all parties involved.

Q: Who or what inspires you the most?

A: I’m definitely motivated and inspired by organizations that are able to blend impact with financial returns, especially in the renewable energy space. When you think about impact, you may potentially see it as a competing with financial return, but in reality, they can reinforce each other. The tax equity space is a good example of how the two can work together. You can have impactful projects that help communities and also have strong financial returns that help investors. You don’t have to sacrifice returns for impact. I think that NT Solar and NTCIC both prove that model works.

Q: What are you most excited about as you step into this role?

A: My focus in my previous role was mainly on smaller scale solar projects, so I’m excited to work on and learn more about how larger scale projects work. I’m excited to work with different developers and investors as well.

I’m also looking forward to learning more about historic tax credits from my NTCIC colleagues in hopes that we’ll have opportunities to work on projects where you blend different types of tax credits. Overall, I’m thrilled to be in a role where we’re able to work on impactful projects and help our investors achieve their goals.

We’re thrilled to have Mortaza as part of the NT Solar team!

July 15th, 2022 Washington, DC: This past month, NT Solar continued a series of successful solar tax credit investments with returning partners Silicon Ranch Corporation, Summit Ridge Energy, and Kearsarge Energy, including an expansion of a previous investment from earlier this year.

The recent closing of three large-scale investment portfolios through NT Solar’s Climate Impact and Revitalization Fund (CIRF) will generate over $57 million in solar investment tax credits (ITCs) and support the installation of six project sites with an installed capacity of nearly 70 Megawatts (MW DC) of energy across four states.

Together, these installations will generate an estimated 95 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean energy each year, offsetting the use of 45 million pounds of coal and enough to power nearly 10,000 homes annually.

“It’s always a pleasure doing repeat deals with familiar sponsors, which helps us deliver reliable year-end results for our investors. NT Solar strives to support impactful renewable energy initiatives that provide affordable energy to thousands across the country while also reactivating otherwise unusable land. Partners like Kearsarge and Summit Ridge are leading the charge.”

Alyssa Watt Senior Asset Manager for NT Solar
Summit Ridge Energy – Partnership 10 Expansion

NT Solar financed an additional three installations, expanding on an investment from earlier this year. These additional installations in Illinois are projected to generate over $7.5 million in solar tax credits and will provide renewable energy to thousands of residential users, each saving up to 10% of traditional energy providers. The installations are anticipated to be complete and in operation by 2022 and will generate an additional 10.75 Gigawatts hours (GWh) each year. The Partnership 10 portfolio includes a 9.2 MW DC site in Maryland, the largest rooftop community solar installation in the state. To learn more about Summit Ridge Energy, visit www.srenergy.com.

Silicon Ranch Corporation – Bell Buckle Installation

In collaboration with returning partner Silicon Ranch Corporation, one of the nation’s largest carbon-free independent power producers, NT Solar provided tax credit financing for the $30 million solar investment tax credits generated by the 337-acre site. The nearly 35 MWac installation will generate over 68 GWh of renewable energy each year. Construction of this large-scale installation will support more than 100 construction jobs, with a preference given to applicants from the Bedford County area and military veteran community. Once operational, the project will supply power to Vanderbilt University and is projected to offset approximately 70% of Vanderbilt’s annual Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions, the equivalent of enough power to serve more than 5,000 homes per year. In addition to these benefits, the project provides long-term tax revenues for the local community and new educational opportunities for faculty and students.

Silicon Ranch will keep the land housing the Bell Buckle Installation in agricultural production post-construction through holistic planned sheep grazing under its Regenerative Energy® approach to solar farm design, construction, and land management. This approach marries grassland restoration and regenerative agriculture practices with renewable energy production on one piece of land to restore soil health and biodiversity, promote and control vegetation, and sequester carbon to enrich the soil. Holistic planned sheep grazing mimics the way grassland ecosystems and large herds of native grazing animals have interacted over millennia. This May, NT Solar, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the National Trust Community Investment Corporation (NTCIC), announced two successful Solar Tax Credit financial closings, including our largest investment to date.

In partnership with the Silicon Ranch Corporation, one of the largest solar developers in the United States, NT Solar financed over $67 million in solar tax credit investments for an installation spanning nearly 600 acres in Calhoun County, Georgia. This is NT Solar’s largest tax credit investment to date and was made possible through NTCIC/NT Solar’s newly established Climate Impact and Revitalization Fund (CIRF).

Once completed, the installation will generate nearly 114 Megawatts (MW) of power and will be purchased by one of the largest electric cooperatives in the country, which currently supplies energy to over 133,000 customers in northeast Georgia. The installation site will use a regenerative approach to the installation site, allowing agricultural and animal grazing alongside the panels.

The developer’s partner, Regenerative Energy describes the process as “adaptively-managed grazing animals, diverse native plants, pollinator habitat, and wildlife work together to revitalize the soil, enhance biodiversity and resilient ecosystems, sequester carbon in the soil, and strengthen rural economies.”

NT Solar also financed a $5.6 million solar tax credit investment to support a large-scale, SMART community solar canopy and battery storage installation in Lancaster, Massachusetts, led by developer Lodestar Energy. Once operational, the installation will generate 5.6 MW of power, generating over 6 million Kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean energy for its user base, which includes regional schools and residential homes. You can read more about the Lodestar Nationwide portfolio here.

These two investments will begin operation in 2021 and will produce nearly 220 million kilowatt-hours of electricity each year, the clean energy equivalent of consuming over 172 million pounds of coal or 360 thousand barrels of oil annually.

Continued Growth of the Solar Industry

The U.S. solar market surpassed 100 gigawatts (GWdc) of installed electric generating capacity, doubling the size of the industry over the last 3.5 years, according to the U.S. Solar Market Insight Q2 2021 report, released today by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and Wood Mackenzie.

Solar had a record-setting Q1 2021 and accounted for 58% of all new electric capacity additions in the United States. The U.S. solar industry installed 5 GW of new capacity in Q1 2021, a new Q1 record, and a 46% increase over Q1 2020.

“As the US solar market continues to grow, I’m proud that NT Solar is keeping pace and pushing boundaries. Our commitment to solar investments that serve the community and our trusted partnerships, like those with Silicon Ranch Corporation and Lodestar Energy, will ensure more communities and companies across the country are able to transition to clean energy.”

NT Solar, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the National Trust Community Investment Corporation (NTCIC), announces $40 million in solar tax credit investments in four multi-state community and municipal solar portfolios supporting 23 installations. These portfolios will provide clean energy savings to public schools, municipalities, and residents across the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast.

The installations, developed by Lodestar Energy, LLCWishcamper Solar Partners, and Summit Ridge Energy, will begin operation in early 2021 and will produce nearly 56 million kilowatt-hours of electricity each year, the clean energy equivalent of consuming over 43 million pounds of coal or 92 thousand barrels of oil annually.

NT Solar and the Growth of Solar Energy Investing

Despite the impact COVID-19 has had across the country, community solar remains the fastest-growing segment within the U.S. solar market. These installations allow multiple customers to share the electricity generated by a solar installation or farm, removing the need to install solar panels directly on a home or business.

A portion of NT Solar’s investments were made possible through NTCIC/NT Solar’s newly established Climate Impact and Revitalization Fund (CIRF), which provides both historic rehabilitation and solar tax credit investments from a single platform. NT Solar will deploy the new fund in solar tax credit projects that provide cost-effective energy options for utilities, residential subscribers, commercial end-users, municipalities, and businesses located in low-income communities.

“We believe in the value of making solar power available to commercial and residential subscribers across multiple communities. The cost savings and environmental benefits will make a positive difference for years to come.”

Karin Berry Vice President and Manager of NT Solar
Lodestar Energy, LLC Portfolio

NT Solar’s two tax credit investments, totaling $12.8 million, will enable Lodestar Energy LLC’s development of seven ground-mounted solar installations in New York, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Founded in 2014 by Jeff Macel and Jaime Smith, Lodestar is an established northeast developer with more than 100 Megawatts (MW) in completed installations. Since that time, Lodestar has successfully completed more than 30 projects with a combined value of more than $200 million dollars, which offset more than 53,000 tons of CO2 and power the equivalent of more than 13,000 homes annually.

The installations in New York are located in designated Opportunity Zones and Lodestar has been at the forefront of combining solar and OZ. The off-takers of the new installations will receive electricity cost savings and include public schools, towns, water treatment facilities, nonprofits, and community residential subscribers.

“We are excited to complete our fourth tax equity financing with NTCIC and are very proud of the work we’ve done as a team to bring new renewable electricity generation to local communities across the northeast.”

Jack Funk Managing Partner of Lodestar Energy
Wishcamper Solar Partners Portfolio

Additionally, NT Solar provided a $1.7 million tax credit investment for six ground- and roof-mounted installations in Maine and New Hampshire. The projects were developed by Wishcamper Solar Partners, a Portland, Maine-based socially motivated for-profit developer of affordable housing with properties in 22 states. The new installations will provide up to 9% in energy savings to subscribers, which include the Nashua school district, Dartmouth College, and three municipalities.

“We are grateful to NT Solar for providing both funding and invaluable guidance to us in a very complicated transaction.”

Lyndel “Joe” Wishcamper President of Wishcamper Companies
Summit Ridge Energy Portfolio

Finally, NT Solar team financed fourteen community solar projects with Summit Ridge Energy (SRE) through NTCIC’s newly created Climate Impact and Revitalization Fund (CIRF). Summit Ridge Energy is the leading owner-operator of U.S. community solar projects. The team has been a strong force within the U.S. commercial solar market for years and was instrumental in the creation of “virtual” solar power purchase agreements and associated financing structures. The ground- and roof-mounted sites are located in Illinois and Maryland and will generate more than $26MM in solar investment tax credits.

“Summit Ridge is pleased to have worked with NT Solar as an advisor on the remaining portion of our 2020 community solar portfolio. The NT Solar team worked quickly and efficiently, and as a result, an additional 4,000 households will begin seeing the benefits of community solar.”

On October 1st, 2018 NT Solar joined project officials and local residents to celebrate the ribbon cutting of a $17 million solar-energy installation located in Montague, Massachusetts. Marking the teamʻs third investment of 2018, the installation transformed an underused landfill into a 6-megawatt solar array, made up of 15,000 panels that cover over 40 acres. The solar installation will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide income from land-lease as well as savings on the cost of power for the Town of Montague.  The Town is committed to using the savings to support their public schools.

“Making brown spaces into green spaces that also return revenue to the town to provide needed services is just a win-win.”

Steve Ellis Town Manager of Montague

NT Solar finances the transformation of sustainable communities nationwide by leveraging solar Investment Tax Credits to finance renewable energy production. To date, the group has raised over $265 million in equity invested in over 247-megawatts of solar energy projects. The power and energy savings generated from these projects are provided to offtakers including low-income residences, retirement communities, municipalities, schools and many others.

Previously in 2018, NT Solar financed an $8 million project based in the town of Charlton, Massachusetts. The three co-located installations produced over 4.7MM kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy for local low-income housing developments. It is estimated that these housing authority offtakers will receive close to a 40% reduction in electricity costs valued at $250,000 a year and accruing over 20 years.
